Über Saugleitungen 31 und 32 wird im Innern des Beutels 20 einerseits und des geschlossenen Gehauses andererseits ein Unterdruck aufgebaut, welcher dafür sorgt, dass über den Flüssigkeitseinlass 21 Flüssigkeit, insbesondere Sekret, in den Auffangbeutel 20 gesaugt wird. Ein am Auffangbeutel 20 vorgesehenes hydrophobes Filter 23 verhindert zum einen das Einsaugen von Flüssigkeit mittels der Saugleitung 31 und sorgt andererseits für eine Differenz der Drücke im Innern des Auffangbeutels bzw. des geschlossenen Behälters.
