PURPOSE: A skin lightening method is provided to lighten skin tone and/or to show photoprotective effect with low cytotoxicity using a compound. CONSTITUTION: A skin lightening method comprises the step of applying a compound of chemical formula I or a cosmetically acceptable salt thereof on skin. The compound is selected among 3-(4-farnesyl oxyphenyl)-propionic acid, 3-(4-farnesyl oxyphenyl-3-hydroxyphenyl)-propionic acid, 3-(4-farnesyl oxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-propionic acid, ethyl ester thereof, and a combination thereof. The compound of chemical formula I contains 3-(4-farnesyl oxyphenyl)-propionic acid. The composition containing 0.001-10% of the compound of chemical formula I is applied onto skin.소정 방향족 화합물 또는 그러한 화합물을 함유하는 식물 추출물을 피부에 적용하는 것에 의한 피부 라이트닝 방법이 제공된다.
