A nasal cannula assembly, and associated system for supplying respiratory gases to a patient, includes providing a gases delivery mechanism and a body connected thereto with a pair of side arms 40010, 40012 extending therefrom. In use, when a force/tension is applied to the side arms the gases delivery mechanism or body moves away from a position imposing upon a user’s nasal spline. In one embodiment the two arms are connected by a continuous section of material which extends along each arm and connects in a region of the gases delivery mechanism. In a second embodiment the side arms have a preform or shape such that before application of a force or tension they curve outwardly away from a patient’s face, extending more outwardly as the arms extend away from the body.
