Disclosed herein is an alcohol based suspension formulation including sodium monensin in an organic liquid phase including at least one polyol, and benzyl alcohol and at least one anionic and/or non-ionic surfactant at least one stabilising agent and water. Additionally disclosed is a method of manufacturing the alcohol based suspension formulation the method including the steps of: (a) wetting and mixing the ionophore antibiotic with benzyl alcohol and surfactant and (b) adding water and/or at least one stabilising agent to the mixture of step (a) and (c) adding at least one polyol to volume to the mixture of step (b). The formulation is useful in the treatment of bloat, ketosis, coccidiosis and enhancing the milk production from a lactating animal.
