PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air cleaner using a photocatalyst filter having a large area of a photocatalyst to be irradiated with light and a high air cleaning performance, capable of removing catalyst poisoning components by washing and maintaining the air cleaning performance for a long period of time even when washing is repeated.SOLUTION: An air cleaner includes a photocatalyst filter composed of planar nonwoven fabric of photocatalyst fibers having titanium oxide on a surface and an ultraviolet ray irradiation means capable of radiating ultraviolet rays, the surface of the planar nonwoven fabric and the longitudinal direction of the ultraviolet ray irradiation means are roughly in parallel, and the flow of air is roughly vertical to the planar nonwoven fabric. In the air cleaner, the photocatalyst fiber is a silica-based composite oxide fiber composed of a composite oxide phase of an oxide phase (first phase) mainly composed of a silica component and a metal oxide phase (second phase) containing titanium, and is the fiber in which the presence ratio of the titanium of the metal oxide configuring the second phase is increased gradually toward the surface layer of the fiber.【課題】 水洗によって触媒被毒成分の除去が可能で、水洗が繰り返されても空気清浄性能を長期間維持することができ、且つ、光が照射される光触媒の面積が大きく、空気清浄性能の高い光触媒フィルターを用いた空気清浄装置を提供することを目的とする。【解決手段】 酸化チタンを表面に有する光触媒繊維の平板状不織布からなる光触媒フィルターと、紫外線を照射可能な紫外線照射手段とを備え、前記平板状不織布の面と紫外線照射手段の長手方向とは略平行であり、空気の流れが前記平板状不織布と略垂直であることを特徴とする空気清浄装置であって、前記光触媒繊維が、シリカ成分を主体とする酸化物相（第１相）とチタンを含む金属酸化物相（第２相）との複合酸化物相からなるシリカ基複合酸化物繊維であって、第２相を構成する金属酸化物のチタンの存在割合が繊維の表層に向かって傾斜的に増大した繊維であることを特徴とする空気清浄装置を提供する。【選択図】 図３
