Method of immobilizing an active agent on a substrate, comprising the steps of: providing a substrate with a surface, the surface of the substrate comprising a surface of a medical device or a component of a medical device, and the substrate being a metal or a material selected from the group consisting of polysulfone, polyisoprene and polycarbonate; contacting the substrate with a solution of a compound that includes a trihydroxyphenyl group, thereby coupling the trihydroxyphenyl group with the surface of the substrate to provide a trihydroxyphenyl treated substrate; and bringing the trihydroxyphenyl treated substrate into contact with an active agent selected from the group consisting of antimicrobial agents, antifouling agents, anti-inflammatory agents, antithrombotic agents, and combinations thereof, thereby coupling the active agent with the compound that includes a trihydroxyphenyl group and immobilizing the active agent on the substrate, the compound which includes a trihydroxyphenyl group being selected from the group consisting of gallic acid, floroglucinolcarboxylic acid, galamide, 5-methylbenzene-1,2,3-triol, 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzaldehyde , 2,3,4-trihydroxy-benzaldehyde, galacetophenone, 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzamide, 2,3,4-trihydroxybenzoic acid, 5-hydroxidepamine hydrochloride, methylgalate, pyrogallol, salts of these compounds and combinations thereof.Método de inmovilizar un agente activo sobre un sustrato, que comprende las etapas de: propocionar un sustrato con una superficie, comprendiendo la superficie de sustrato una superficie de un dispositivo médico o un componente de dispositivo médico, y siendo el sustrato de metal o de un material seleccionado entre el grupo consistente en polisulfona, poliisopreno y policarbonato; poner el sustrato en contacto con una solución de un compuesto que incluye un grupo trihidroxifenilo, acoplando así el grupo trihidroxifenilo con la superficie del sustrato para proporcionar un sustrato tratado con trihidroxifenilo; y
