PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly and surely detect opening and closing of human eyes.
SOLUTION: In a detection apparatus, an opening and closing detection unit 121 detects the opening and closing degree, showing the degree of opening of a driver, on the basis of the face image of the driver captured by an imaging device 111. A viewing direction detecting unit 122 detects the viewing direction of a person, on the basis of the face image of the driver. A threshold-setting unit 123 sets a determination threshold for use in determination of opening and closing of eyes on the basis of the detected viewing direction of the driver. An opening and closing determining unit 124 determines the opening and the closing of the drivers eyes, in comparison of the detected opening and closing degree of the drivers eyes with the determination threshold set. The detection apparatus is applicable to, for example, on-vehicle opening and closing detection apparatuses for drivers eyes.
