PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ophthalmic composition having an excellent antimicrobial activity for staphylococci which are pathogenic bacteria of a plurality of infectious diseases in external ophthalmic sites, readily formulable and having an enhanced antimicrobial activity without causing trouble such as ophthalmic irritation.SOLUTION: The ophthalmic composition comprises a sulfa drug and berberines. In this case, the sulfa drug is preferably sulfisomidine, sulfisoxazole or sulfamethizole and the berberines are preferably berberine chloride or berberine sulfate or an extract from Phellodendri Cortex or Coptis Rhizome. The formulation ratio of both the sulfa drug and the berberines is preferably (10-10,000):1 of the sulfa drug:berberines expressed in terms of mass ratio.COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO【課題】 多くの外眼部感染症の病原菌であるブドウ球菌に対する抗菌力に優れ、製剤化し易く、眼刺激等の不具合を生じることのない抗菌力が増強された眼科組成物の提供。【解決手段】 サルファ剤とベルベリン類とを含有してなることを特徴とする眼科組成物。この場合、前記サルファ剤が、スルフイソミジン、スルフイソキサゾール、又はスルファメチゾールであることが好ましく、前記ベルベリン類が、塩化ベルベリン又は硫酸ベルベリン、若しくはオウバク又はオウレンの抽出物であることが好ましく、両者の配合割合が、質量比でサルファ剤:ベルベリン類=10~10000:1であることが好ましい。
