The emphasis is on the capabilities of this instrument in addressing important problems, such as the detection, diagnosis and ongoing monitoring of caries lesions and or defects in occluded cavities or cracks, soft surfaces and interproximal areas between teeth that are not normally detected by radiographs of x-ray or visual examination. The instrument is also capable of detecting areas of demineralized tooth and / or areas of remineralized tooth early, as well as defects along the margins of the restorations. This ability to inspect a local stain can be extended to a modulated image formation of the sub-surface of the target tooth using a multi-array infrared camera.
