Embodiments of a detachable tip device have been disclosed that include a distal bone penetration mechanism and an anchoring mechanism that allows the detachable tip device to be separably secured to the distal ends of various embodiments of the bone coring device. Some embodiments of the removable tip device include a mechanism that assists in transmitting the torsional load from the bone coring device to the bone removal mechanism. In addition, some embodiments of the removable tip device include a protective element configured to provide a protective surface for the distal mechanism of the bone coring device.
