A system comprising: a shape recognition device (102) having at least one optical fiber (126); an interpretation module (115) configured to receive optical signals from at least one optical fiber within a structure and interpret optical signals to determine the shape of the device; imaging module (140) configured to obtain a device shape, match the shape with the image volume (130) of the structure, and generate a reproduction (402) of curvilinear multiplanar reconstruction (CMPR) based on the shape. 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the imaged volume (130) includes a three-dimensional image of the structure obtained by one or more of computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, fluoroscopy, radionuclide imaging, and ultrasound. The system of claim 1, wherein the shape recognition device (102) includes an elongated instrument including one or more of an endoscope, catheter, and wire guide. A system according to claim 1, in which the device (102) with the ability to recognize the shape includes a visualization device configured to collect images on a medical device with the ability to recognize the shape. The system of claim 1, wherein the device (102) with the possibility of shape recognition collects information about the trajectory for the structure in three-dimensional space, around the axis of at least one optical fiber and over time.
