An apparatus (i.e. hoist, stair lift, adjustable bed or chair) comprising: a support structure 21 for a person； drive means for the support structure； actuation and stopping means for the drive means； a system 1 which monitors performance parameters for the drive, actuator and stopping means at predefined periods； a memory to store obtained parameters； and a transmitter for transmitting the parameters to a remote device for analysing the parameters and transmitting an alarm message when the parameters indicate a predetermined potential danger condition. A receiver may receive the alarm message via a visible display or audible signal, and the drive means may be reset on receipt of the alarm message. Performance parameters may include location data comprising GPS data, a history of usage for the drive and/or actuation means, whether a power supply has failed, whether a battery needs recharging or replacing, and/or a charging history for the battery. The potential danger condition may be that the apparatus is at an unexpected location, and the apparatus may further comprise an emergency call device and/or a weighing means for the person.
