A needle for collecting a tissue sample includes a needle body extending longitudinally from a proximal end to a distal end and including a sharp tip at the distal end for penetrating tissue. The needle body includes a conduit extending into the interior of the needle body for collecting a tissue sample when the distal end is inserted into the tissue. The distal portion of the needle body has a first stiffness and the proximal portion of the needle body has a second stiffness lower than the first stiffness.
