The present invention provides a method of treating a seaweed extract comprising a target molecule and a pyrogenic agent, the method comprising the step(s) of: contacting the extract with an effective amount of an oxidant and a base, wherein the method results in a reduction in pyrogenicity of the extract. The present methods are useful in the preparation of pharmaceutical compositions and biomaterials for which pyrogen removal is critical.
