The subject invention provides compositions and methods for treating diabetesin patients. In a preferred embodiment, the invention provides compositionsmethods for treating diabetes and/or preventing or alleviating complicationsassociated with diabetes. Specifically exemplified herein is the concurrentadministration of a cysteamine compound with at least one additionaltherapeutic agent to prevent and/or treat diabetes as well as prevent and/ortreat complications associated with diabetes. In a preferred embodiment, oraladministration of cysteamine hydrochloride with Metformin to a patientdiagnosed with diabetes can substantially regulate the patient~s glucosemetabolism and insulin sensitivity.
