The invention relates to ruthenium complexes for treating cancer which comprises cancer stem cells. The present invention relates to the use of ruthenium(II) complexes to prepare a medicinal product for treating cancer, especially cancer which comprises cancer stem cells. Said ruthenium complexes are able to selectively metallate the guanine quadruplexes, thus resulting in increased expression of the c-MYC oncogene. Said increase in the proportion of c-MYC may promote the differentiation of cancer stem cells.
