The present invention relates to an apparatus (1) for planting seedlings (44) of an agricultural plant. In particular, the apparatus (1) is adapted for planting sugar cane seedlings (44). The apparatus (1) comprises means (2) for moving the apparatus (1) in a first direction (VA) over a field with soil in which the seedlings (44) are to be planted. Further, the apparatus (1) comprises a seedling conveying device (7) for conveying individual seedlings (44) at a defined time interval to a seedling pushing mechanism (39-43), said seedling pushing mechanism (39-43) being adapted to push the seedling (44) into a second direction (VP) that is opposite to the first direction (VA), wherein the action of the seedling conveying device (7) and the action of the seedling pushing mechanism (39-43) are synchronised with each other. Moreover, the invention relates to the use of this apparatus (1) for planting a seedling (44) of a graminaceous plant, in particular the seedling (44) of a sugar cane plant.
