An integrated pharmacy system receives prescription information, creates asubstitution reference list identifying the requested medical item and aplurality of equivalent medical items, automatically selects one of the itemsidentified on the substitution reference list, fills the prescription, checksthe accuracy of the filled prescription, facilitates the sales exchange, andcreates an archive of the transaction, although not all steps need to beperformed for every application. The integrated pharmacy system can alsoprevent unauthorized users form performing improper functions such as, forexample, attempting to dispense an item which is not a proper substitute forthe requested item. The present invention, by automatically substitutingequivalent medical items for a requested medical item and by automaticallyarchiving each prescription transaction, simplifies the prescription fillingand record keeping requirements for the pharmacy technician and pharmacist.
