Methods of using the early apoptotic cell populations and compositions thereof disclosed herein include methods of treating cancer or tumors, extending the survival of subjects suffering from cancers or tumors, and cancers or tumors. And reducing the growth rate, wherein the subject is administered apoptotic cells or compositions thereof. Cancer may include solid tumors or diffuse cancers such as leukemia. In particular examples, the composition may include an additional chemotherapeutic agent. In addition, inactivated early apoptotic cell populations and methods for their production are disclosed.
