The invention is directed to a recombinant replication defective hepatitis Bvirus comprising ahepatitis B virus genome defective for the expression of hepatitis B viruscapsid protein (HBc),said virus containing a nucleotide sequence encoding a foreign peptide notfound in the wild typehepatitis B virus comprising at least one immuno-dominant epitope. Theinvention is alsodirected to the use of said recombinant replication defective hepatitis Bvirus as a medicament,preferably a vaccine, treating a patient chronically or persistently infectedby a hepatitis B virus.
