A method for breaking genetic linkage useful for separating desirable traits from undesirable traits in hybrid plants comprising: a) culturing a callus from a explant of a hybrid plant or from a somatic cell hybrid on a basal medium containing a somatic recombination inducing amount of growth regulator substances and regenerating shoots from said callus; b) rooting said regenerated shoots on a rooting medium to form regenerated plantlets; c) growing said plantlets into mature plants; and d) recovering those plants displaying a recombinant phenotype. i
