A cartridge 12 to be over-moulded into an animal tag includes an elongate integral shell defining a space to house the transponder casing 40 in which a transponder is fitted, the shell having an opening along the length of the shell to enable insertion or extraction of the transponder casing from the space. A set of clips 46, 48, 50, 52 retains the transponder casing in the space to prevent dislodgement, movement and damage to the transponder casing within the cartridge due to external forces on the tag when fitted to an animal or as the cartridge and casing are encapsulated during an over-moulding applied to the cartridge and housed casing.
