A projectile includes a bag 8 of gaseous medium to effectively retard the velocity thereof on impact with a target in such a way as to prevent excess damage, injury or penetration. The bag 8 is configured to increase in area at a nose of the projectile following impact with a target, wherein said projectile comprises a needle 5 for penetrating a target and a cap 10 which encloses said bag 8 and includes a flat surface 12. The projectile may be used in a delivery system (commonly known as a dart) for a tranquilising substance, drug, vaccine, medication identification means or tracking device or to take a tissue sample from an animal.
