A portable water purification attachment system includes ultraviolet light sources, such as, UV-light emitting diodes, that emit ultraviolet light in the germicidal range. The ultraviolet light sources are housed in an enclosure that floats at one end while allowing the ultraviolet light sources to be submerged below the surface of the water. This enclosure also includes a source of vibration, such as a vibrating-mini-motor-disc, that will switch on in conjunction with ultraviolet light sources to circulate water to be treated. The system operates to turn on the ultraviolet light sources under the control of one or more electronic signals. This signal may in turn be under the control of a liquid- level sensor that senses when the ultraviolet light sources are immersed in water. The system may also include a timing circuit that turns the ultraviolet light sources off a predetermined time after they are turned on. The system power is provided by a connector that connects the system to another electronic device, such as a mobile phone.
