The present invention provides an improved process for the preparation of pure 4-(3,5-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-lH-l,2,4-triazol-l- yl)benzoic acid (I) commonly known as Deferasirox or its salt containing hydrazine impurity less than about 0.75 ppm comprising treating the crude deferasirox with oxone. In addition, the present invention provides an improved process for the preparation of pure 4-(3,5-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-lH-l,2,4-triazol-l-yl)benzoic acid (I) commonly known as Deferasirox or its salt containing hydrazine impurity less than about 0.75 ppm comprising treating the crude deferasirox with a ketone solvent.
