The invention relates to medicine, and specifically to hepatology, and can be used in diagnosing liver diseases when formulating a preliminary diagnosis. The claimed method and a combination of hardware and software allow for formulating, on the basis of using simple parameters, one of the following presumptive diagnoses: non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, alcoholic liver disease, hepatitis C, hepatitis B, cholestatic liver disease, autoimmune liver disease, drug-induced liver damage, and other liver diseases or, alternatively, for concluding that no abnormalities exist which would be characteristic of liver diseases when examining the patient using a combination of simple laboratory tests (ALT, AST, AP, GGT, gamma-globulins, total bilirubin, hepatitis C virus antibodies (anti-HCV), hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) and direct patient characteristics (gender and age, height and weight), and anamnesis data regarding the systematic consumption of alcohol and regarding the taking of medicinal agents of any type over periods specified in the invention. In constructing a preliminary diagnosis (one of those listed above) it is also necessary to calculate a De Ritis quotient (ratio of AST to ALT) and a body mass index (BMI=weight/height, weight change in kilograms, weight in meters squared).
