The present invention relates to recombinant attenuated pestivurses, in particular to recombinant attenuated CSFV, BVDV, or BDV, wherein said recombinant attenuated pestivirus does not produce a dimeric Ems glycoprotein. The present invention also relates to immunogenic compositions comprising such a pestivirus as well as to a method of attenuating a pestivirus comprising the step of modifying the Ems glycoprotein by a deletion, insertion or substitution wherein such modification results in a non dimeric Ems glycoprotein.
