This disclosure relates to methods of treating a patient in need of treatment for a microorganism infection, methods of treating a disease, methods for reducing viral shedding, reducing aerosolization, reducing infection, and delivery systems. Compositions which can be used in the disclosed methods and delivery systems are also disclosed. In particular, the invention provides a composition comprising DMSO, water, povidone-iodine (PVP-I) and a cellulosic polymer, or a composition comprising PVP-I, water and cellulosic polymers without DMSO and without alcohol.
