An electrosurgical instrument is provided comprising a shaft having alongitudinal axisand an electrode assembly at one end. The electrode assembly comprises a firstand asecond tissue treatment electrode, and a third electrode which is electricallyinsulatedfrom the first and second electrodes； an exposed surface of the firstelectrode beingsuch as to treat tissue disposed on the longitudinal axis, and an exposedsurface of thesecond electrode being such as to treat tissue disposed laterally of thelongitudinal axis.The instrument has a first set of connections by which the first electrode canbe placedin circuit with the second electrode such that, in use, a current path isestablishedtherebetween. The instrument has a second set of connections by which thesecondelectrode can be placed in circuit with the third electrode such that, in use,a currentpath is established therebetween.
