A method of improving the characteristics of the offspring or the offspring is provided. The method may comprise administering to a pregnant animal an effective amount of a composition comprising active IGF-1, wherein the offspring of the pregnant animal are improved in comparison to the control offspring. In another embodiment, the animal is a mammalian animal, and the characteristics of the offspring the mammal cares for are improved relative to the control offspring. Examples of properties that may be improved include an increased survival rate of the pre-weaning offspring, an increased weight of the offspring weaning, an increased weight of the offspring at the end of the growth phase, an increased average daily gain, and an increased average daily food intake.
