A method and medical device for detecting a cardiac event that includes sensing a cardiac signal, identifying R-waves in the cardiac signal attendant ventricular depolarizations, determining RR-intervals between successive R-waves in response to the sensed cardiac signal, detecting an atrial tachyarrhythmia based on an analysis of the RR- intervals, iteratively sensing groups of a predetermined number of P- waves attendant atrial depolarizations in response to detecting the atrial tachyarrhythmia, and confirming the atrial tachyarrhythmia based on a P-wave template matching analysis of the iteratively sensed groups of P-waves.Cette invention porte sur un procédé et un dispositif médicaux permettant de détecter un événement cardiaque et comprenant la détection d'un signal cardiaque, l'identification d'ondes R dans le signal cardiaque accompagnant des dépolarisations ventriculaires, la détermination d'intervalles RR entre des ondes R successives en réponse au signal cardiaque détecté, la détection d'une tachyarythmie auriculaire sur la base d'une analyse des intervalles RR, de manière itérative la détection de groupes d'un nombre prédéterminé d'ondes P accompagnant des dépolarisations auriculaires en réponse à la détection de la tachyarythmie auriculaire, et la conformation de la tachyarythmie auriculaire sur la base d'une analyse correspondant au modèle d'ondes P des groupes d'ondes P détectées de manière itérative.
