A composition comprising energy (eg, light) absorbing submicron particles (eg, nanoparticles comprising a silica core and a gold shell) and methods of delivering such particles by topical application. The delivery is facilitated by mechanical agitation (eg, massage), acoustic vibrations in the range of 10 Hz to 20 kHz, ultrasound, repeated suction and pressurization and application of microjets. Additionally or optionally, sufficient evaporation of the formulation leaves a residue of particles on the surface of the skin, and then applying a sufficient amount of liquid to the treatment site and delivering the particles to a portion of the skin. One or more steps of promoting are repeated. Finally, the particles are properly energy activated, thereby obtaining the desired therapeutic or clinical result.
