The present invention provides a composition comprising energy (eg light) absorbing submicron particles (eg nanoparticles comprising a silica core and a gold shell) and a method of delivering such particles by topical application. This delivery is facilitated by mechanical agitation (eg massage), acoustic vibrations in the range of 10 Hz to 20 kHz, ultrasound, repetition of suction and pressurization and microjet application. Additionally or optionally, there is the step of applying a sufficient amount of liquid to the treatment site after the particle residue remains on the surface of the skin by sufficient evaporation of the formulation. Thereafter, one or more steps that promote delivery of the particles to a portion of the skin are repeated.
