A cooling device 100 for cooling a subject's tissue or organ surface, the device 100 comprising a handle 20 and a head 10. The head 10 comprises an electrical cooling element 24 (e.g. Peltier) for cooling the subject's tissue or organ surface. The device also comprises a controller (32 figure 6) configured to: receive the initial temperature of the subject's tissue or organ surface (this may be a pre known average or may be from a temperature sensor 22); determine a cooling temperature based on the initial temperature of the subject's tissue or organ surface and a target temperature; and control the cooling element 24 to generate the cooling temperature. The head 10 may be annular in shape and/or have an aperture / window 18. The invention also provides a separate head and handle. The invention also provides a method of controlling the cooling device 100.
