599527 Disclosed herein are fragmented polysaccharide based hydrogel compositions and methods of making and using the same are provided. The subject polysaccharide based hydrogel compositions are prepared by combining a polysaccharide component with a hydrophilic polymer and a cross-linking agent. Also provided are kits and systems for use in preparing the subject compositions. In one embodiment the method of making a fragmented hydrogel composition comprises combining in a solution components of a hydrogel composition, comprising a polysaccharide, such as chitosan, carboxymethylcellulose, or carboxymethylchitosan having a molecular weight of 160 Dalton to 80,300 Dalton and comprising at least two reactive nucleophilic groups, a synthetic hydrophilic polymer, such as a multi-armed polyethylene glycol, with amolecular weight of 200 Dalton to 100,000 Dalton and comprising at least twonucleophilic reactive groups, and a synthetic hydrophilic crosslinker, such as a multi-armed polyethylene glycol, with a molecular weight of 200 Dalton to 100,000 Dalton and comprising at least two reactive electrophilic groups; allowing the solution to cure for a sufficient period of time to form a cured hydrogel composition; and fragmenting the cured hydrogel composition to form a fragmented hydrogel composition.
