The present invention relates to oral sustained release formulations comprising a core comprising tofacitinib or a pharmaceutical acceptable salt thereof, and a semipermeable membrane coating surrounding the core, wherein said coating comprises a water-insoluble polymer, wherein the water-insoluble polymer is a cellulose derivative that sustains release of the tofacitinib. The formulations described herein have desirable pharmacokinetic characteristics, for example AUC, Cmax dose-adjusted AUC, dose-adjusted Cmax, and fed/fasted AUC and Cmax ratios.
