A handle 11 for an instrument comprising a convex arcuate surface 16 in which the handle mass is concentrated closer to its proximal end. The handle comprises one or more finger grips 18, 19, 20. The grips 18, 19, 20 may be defined by surfaces which reduce in diameter along its longitudinal axis. The handle 11 comprises a bore which terminates in a socket. Also disclosed is a functional fitting to perform a dental procedure. The functional fitting comprises a shaft comprising a mounting part for removable engagement with a handle. The mounting part having a first facility to locate said fitting against rotating with respect to a handle and a second facility to locate fitting against longitudinal sliding. The step is located at one end of a square or hexagonal section, in which a fastening extends opposite to the step and comprises a threaded spigot.
