The method involves imaging a food product (3). A rear end (17) of the food product is received. Determination is made whether skin (5) is present on the food product by evaluating the image. A part of the image is evaluated for one or more forms or contours in respect of brightness distribution, contrast distribution and color distribution. The image is evaluated to determine whether a corner (19) of the skin at the rear end of the product is present. The check is performed by comparing the captured image with a reference image of the rear end of the food product.
