An ophthalmic device provided with: an eye characteristic measuring section equipped with an optical system for measuring an eye to be examined of a subject an electric control lever mechanism for outputting as an electrical signal a tilting operation applied to a control lever and a control mechanism for generating and transmitting to a movement mechanism a control command used for movement control for moving the eye characteristic measuring section on the basis of the signal from the control lever mechanism. The control mechanism sets a region having a predetermined size and substantially centered on the measuring optical axis of the eye characteristic measuring section and calculates the position of the center of the eye to be examined. Then, when the position of the center of the eye to be examined is within the set region, the control mechanism performs positional control for changing the amount of movement of the eye characteristic measuring section according to the tilt angle of the control lever, and when the position of the center of the eye to be examined is not within the set region, the control mechanism performs speed control for changing the speed of movement of the eye characteristic measuring section according to the tilt angle of the control lever.
