Systems and methods for the oral administration of a therapy are disclosed. For example, the therapy can treat symptoms of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) by providing a medicinal agent to the esophagus and mouth to counter acidic reflux. In one embodiment, the agent includes an antacid. In another embodiment, the agent comprises a salivant. Also, an antacid and salivant may be employed together. The active agents may be further combined with other ingredients, including materials that foster slow release of the active ingredients, as well as coatings and flavorings. The active agents may be provided in the form of a tablet or as granules. The active agents can be positioned in the buccal area； i.e., between the upper gum and the cheek, and particularly within close proximity to the outlet of the parotid saliva duct.
