An orthodontic ligature for fixing an orthodontic arch wire to an orthodontic bracket. The orthodontic ligature is formed from an elastic band forming a flap. The flap forms a gripping portion. The elastic band defines a non-circular hole having a major dimension along the direction in which the gripping portion extends.
