This invention disclosed compositions that are useful for the treatment of bone marrow edema (BME). The compositions include polysulfated polysaccharides, such as the sodium salt of pentosan polysulfate. A preferred method of diagnosis of BME is by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Administration of the compositions, particularly by injection in a dose of about 1-2 mg/kg body weight per dose, is generally effective when administered once daily or thrice weekly.
