A work machine (10) for harvesting a cane crop includes a chassis, a lower crop material gathering device (20) and an upper crop material gathering device (22) both coupled to said chassis. The upper crop material gathering device (22) includes at least one moving device (70) configured to substantially surround a stalk of a cane crop plant as said at least one moving device (70) moves, and a stalk engaging device (76) positioned proximate to the at least one moving device (70). The stalk engaging device (76) is configured to pull the stalk from the at least one moving device (70), thereby stripping grain from a head of the cane crop plant.
