A work machine (10) for harvesting a cane crop includes a chassis, a lower crop material gathering device (20) and an upper crop material gathering device (22) both coupled to said chassis. The upper crop material gathering device (22) includes at least one moving device (70) and a stalk cutting device (62). The at least one moving device (70) is configured to substantially surround a stalk of a cane crop plant as the at least one moving device (70) moves. The at least one moving device (70) is further configured to bend the head of the cane crop plant in a direction substantially opposite to the direction of travel. The stalk cutting device (862) is positioned proximate to the at least one moving device (70). The stalk cutting device (62) is configured to cut the peduncle of the cane crop plant.
