Nucleic acid having a fully defined sequence (S1) of 780 nucleotides, given in the specification, containing a promoter that mediates gene expression in plants, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) expression cassette (EC) for expression or suppression of selected homologous or heterologous genes in plant seeds, especially in transfer cells, contains (S1), or its fragments or sequences that hydridize to (S1); (2) plasmids that contain EC; (3) genetic alteration of plant cells or plants that contain an EC to provide seed-specific expression; (4) plant cells produced by method (3), or containing EC, also tissues and plants regenerated from them.
