PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent damaging bark, to deal with changes in the outside diameter of a tree stem even if the outside diameter changes during climbing up and down, and to reduce the load of a device.SOLUTION: The device for climbing up and down a columnar body includes a ring-shaped element 1 having a plurality of multi-directional casters 2 provided on its interior wall surface, and a plurality of pushers 9 provided on an outer wall surface of the ring-shaped element via connections 10, the directions of the pushers being variable in a vertical or horizontal direction. The ring-shaped element includes a ring-opening section and can open at the ring-opening section 4. The ring-shaped element includes a plurality of ring component parts 3 added or decreased. The adjacent ring component parts are interconnected via means having an elastic function, so that the ring diameter of the ring-shaped element can be increased or decreased. The plurality of pushers are arranged at approximately equal intervals to one another.
