PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a treatment method using ammonia-scavenging drugs.SOLUTION: The invention provides a method for determining a dose and a schedule of a dose of PBA prodrugs used to treat nitrogen retention states, or ammonia accumulation disorders, and for adjusting the dose of the PBA prodrugs, by measuring urinary excretion of phenylacetylglutamine and/or total urinary nitrogen. The invention provides a method to select an appropriate dosage of the PBA prodrug on the basis of dietary protein intake of a patient, or previous treatment administered to the patient.
