PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hair-treating agent capable of recovering hairs to their original state by suppressing leaps or undulations formed at a tip end of the hairs on which excessive damages accumulate, suppressing the deterioration of touch feeling of the hairs, and uniformly dyeing from the root to the tip end of the hairs.SOLUTION: This hair-treating agent contains the following components (a) and (b): (a) a quaternary ammonium salt expressed by general formula (1) [wherein, R1 is a 6-18C hydrocarbon group R2 and R3 are each the same or different and a 1-3C alkyl, (n) is an integer of 0 to 2 and X- is an anion] and having 30 to 100% ratio occupied by a &le10 C hydrocarbon group in the total hydrocarbon group R1 based on the chemical formula amount of the R1, and rest by a &ge11C hydrocarbon group.
