An apparatus 1 for growing one or more plants, comprises a first and a second chamber which are separated from each other by a first dividing wall 15. The second chamber is above the first chamber. The interior spaces of the first and the second chamber are connected by one or more connecting openings 16 in the first dividing wall 15, and the second chamber 20 includes one or more exit openings 26 which are arranged on a second dividing wall 25. The volume of at least one of the first chamber 10 and the second chamber 20 is variable. The first and second chambers are operative such that roots of the one or more plants are located in the first chamber 10, a crop part of the one or more plants is located in the second chamber 20 and a leaf canopy of the one or more plants is located above the second chamber 20.
