The present invention is generally in the field of methods, compositions, and devices for reducing the incidence of mastitis in an animal. More specifically the invention includes methods and compositions for creating a physical barrier on the teat surface or in the teat canal of an animal for prophylactic treatment of mammary disorders. In one embodiment, the methods and compositions are designed for use during the animals dry period. In one embodiment, the methods and compositions are designed for placement in the teat cistern. In one embodiment, the methods and compositions are designed for placement in adhering to the external teat.
